I’m Rand—a former refugee, self-taught artist, social worker, and a mother. Like many of you, I have carried the weight of war, displacement, and trauma. I know how it feels to lose a sense of home, to hold onto pain in silence, and to search for a way to heal.
Art has become my refuge, a way to speak when words feel too heavy. Abstract art, in particular, has been my healing tool—a way to release emotions I cannot put into words, to transform pain into color, and to reclaim my sense of self. The textures and movement in my work reflect the complexities of trauma and healing, offering a visual language for what so often remains unspoken.
Storytelling is another powerful tool that binds us together, reminding us that we are not alone. I believe that by embracing our stories—through art and words—we create space for healing, for ourselves and each other.
“Vulnerability is the birthplace of love, belonging, joy, courage, empathy, and creativity. It is the source of hope, empathy, accountability, and authenticity. If we want greater clarity in our purpose or deeper and more meaningful spiritual lives, vulnerability is the path.”
Brené Brown
As a former refugee from Iraq, I deeply understand the wounds of war, the heartbreak of leaving home, and the struggle of rebuilding life in an unfamiliar place. Refugees, especially women and mothers, carry untold stories of loss, strength, and survival. This blog is a space to honor those stories, shed light on the challenges we face, and emphasize the importance of emotional healing.
Through this blog, I hope to share my artwork with others—not just as a personal expression, but as an inspiration for you to find your own creative voice. Whether through painting, writing, or any other form of self-expression, I encourage you to explore what helps you heal.
Healing is not a solitary journey—it is a shared one. As a mother, I have learned that nurturing our own well-being is just as important as caring for those we love. We deserve spaces where we can express our emotions freely, where we can reclaim our identities beyond survival, and where we can find peace after war.
I invite you to share your journey of resilience, hope, and healing. Your voice matters, and through this space, we can lift each other up. If you’d like to share your story—or the story of another woman or girl who has endured trauma and displacement—please send it to me. I would love to feature it on my blog.
By supporting my artwork—whether through purchasing, sharing, or engaging with it—you help sustain this mission and amplify the voices of women and girls who need to be heard. A portion of my art sales goes toward covering materials and maintaining this blog, while another portion is donated to the International Rescue Committee (IRC), an organization dedicated to supporting refugees and displaced communities worldwide.
Thank you for being part of this journey. May this space inspire you to express, heal, and find strength in your own creative voice.
